Satellite Communication in the BWCAW

Many people look forward to getting in the BWCAW to get close to nature, explore waters few have seen, and generally decompress from the technology and pressures of daily life.

Some people avoid a canoe or hiking trip because cellphone service is virtually nonexistent in the BWCAW.

Staying connected using satellite communication in the wilderness is pretty easy these days. There are time-tested and new options for communication in emergencies or when you just need to keep in touch with family and friends—no matter the reason. Your significant other might want a reassuring text each night to ensure everything is going well, and others might want to follow your route from afar. With thoughtful preparation and various communication options, it can be easily managed.

At Rockwood, we have the expertise to ensure you have the communication options you need.

New iPhone technology

With the iPhone 14 or later and iOS18, you can send iMessages or SMS messages via satellite when you’re off the grid. This feature provides a reassuring connection to friends and family, even in the most remote areas. Apple’s technology allows you to send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks, ensuring you’re never truly disconnected.

To connect to a satellite, you must be outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon.

Carl Madsen, one of the Rockwood owners, said, “The new operating system for Apple iPhones has Satellite messenger turned on, so everyone can text without cell service. There is no need for a special plan or InReach device. There are limitations, but it actually works.” And Apple provides the service for free for two years.

Your iPhone must have compatible software to use satellite connectivity. Before you go somewhere that does not have cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, you should update to the latest version of iOS. Satellite features are included for free for two years with the activation of an iPhone 14 or later.

Unlike previous solutions like dedicated satellite communicators (e.g., InReach), iPhone users can leverage their existing phones without purchasing additional hardware. The satellite service is free for two years, eliminating the need for a separate satellite plan or subscription.

Your iPhone tries to connect you via satellite if you have a clear view of the sky and horizon. The experience of using a satellite connection is different from sending or receiving a message via cellular. Depending on satellite coverage, there are potential delays in message delivery, character limits, and restricted availability in certain regions.

Carl pointed out that they have used satellite texting between iPhones several times. Once, he was on Saganaga Lake and texted the lodge. Another time, the power was out on the Trail, and so were all the Wi-Fi routers and phones at Rockwood.

Carl said, “It worked great. But I had to keep pointing the phone towards the satellite.”

He reminds us that text messages are one-to-one and do not include images or group chats.

Carl added, “It was rather quick sometimes, just a few minutes between sending and receiving, whereas the Garmin InReach is sometimes 15 minutes between texts.”

This Apple texting plan is helpful when you are in remote areas for emergencies or routine “stay in touch” communications.

Other Satellite Options

Satellite communications devices allow you to send pre-written messages and track your location by satellite, and are more reliable and rugged than smartphones.

Popular brands include SPOT and Garmin InReach.

The SPOT X’s two-way communication device uses GPS satellites to determine your location, send messages to friends and family, or search and rescue if needed via communication satellites. SPOT is owned by Globalstar, Inc. and is located in Louisiana.

The Garmin InReach products provide messaging, location tracking, and weather reports, keeping you connected to vital information wherever you may be.

The ResQLink product from ACR Electronics, Inc. is a personal locator beacon that uses satellite technology.

Satellite phones allow you to make voice calls and send messages.

Iridium phones offer connectivity that pushes the boundaries with calling, text messaging, SOS, GPS tracking, and long-range walkie-talkie-style connectivity for groups.

The Garmin InReach system we have at Rockwood offers texting and tracking. Ask us about how we can make it work for you.

Safety is not just a priority; it’s our mantra here at Rockwood. We are committed to ensuring your safety and well-being during your BWCAW adventure.

Safety in the BWCAW is our mantra here at Rockwood. Here are some things to  consider for using technology in the wild:

For those of you cutting the technology cord in the BWCAW, there are a few communication methods you may use that are tried and true, if not as immediate as satellite devices.

Use a loud whistle to signal for help in an emergency.

Smoke from a small fire can attract attention. Add damp materials like leaves and grass to create large puffs of smoke, but be cautious and follow fire safety guidelines.

Use a mirror or other reflective object to signal a plane, helicopter, or other paddlers.

In addition, we advise you to share your itinerary with friends, family, or a ranger station before your trip. Stay informed about weather conditions to avoid potential hazards. And pack in enough essential supplies like food, water, maps, and a compass.

Peace of Mind For Your Adventure

The best approach to wilderness communication combines traditional methods and modern technology. While satellite communication can be a valuable tool, it’s important to remember that it’s not a substitute for basic safety measures. Be prepared and knowledgeable to increase your chances of staying safe and connected, even in the most remote areas.
